 2023 Preview 


       Hillcrest completed the 2022 season with a 11-1 record. The Patriots cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Hillcrest captured the region four title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Hillcrest reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Saraland by a score of 56-31.

       The 506 points scored by the Patriots last year were a team record in a single season.

       The high-scoring Hillcrest Tuscaloosa offense ranked 15th in the AHSAA. They averaged 42.2 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Patriots have Finished 22-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Hillcrest has gone a combined 111-46. Their 70.7% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Hillcrest has managed to compile a record of 173-115. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 6A and 92nd in the AHSAA.




       The Patriots are led by head coach Jamie Mitchell who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 22-4 over the past two seasons at Hillcrest. Under his direction the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have won one region crown with Coach Mitchell. The win total includes 26 wins in Alabama and 216 victories from outside the state. Over the course of his career, Coach Mitchell's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship.

       Coach Mitchell has the Patriots on top of their game for sure and 2023 will be more of the same in Tuscaloosa.

       The Patriots enter the 2023 season riding a 15 game regular season winning streak. Hillcrest has won 11 consecutive region games.

       The Patriots are considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

      Travaris Banks will return at the safety position for Hillcrest in 2023.

       The Patriots open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Southaven MS on Saturday, August 26 at Roy Johnson Jr. Stadium.

       This will be the second meeting between Hillcrest Tuscaloosa and Southaven MS on the football field. The Patriots have a 1-0-0 record against Southaven MS. They last met in with

       Hillcrest lost 6A All-State  offensive lineman Jayden Hobson to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates linebacker Collin Dunn, quarterback Ethan Crawford and running back Jamarian Johnson.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
